Now
Personal websites often have a link that says “now” that tells you what this person is focused on at this point in their life. It’s called a “now page”.
A /now page shares what you’d tell a friend you hadn’t seen in a year.
Now
I am mostly recovered from a fractured vertebra that I acquired when I fell down on the morning of October 31. I am still trying to get out for a walk every day, but that is now down to about three times a week or so. As I've gotten older the routine activities of daily living seem to take up a larger proportion of each day, so it is good that we are retired and can fill what's left of each day with the activities we enjoy. For me that means tinkering with computers and making occasional updates to my website, plus reading, and listening to classical music.
If you haven't seen me in the last year or two you may have to look twice to make sure it's still me -- I've finally reached the weight loss goal that I've been working toward since 2012. From more than 350 to less than 200 has taken quite a while to accomplish, but it has been worth the effort.
We did not have a large family gathering here this summer, as we have done for the past few years. Some of our folks are plannig to visit us during the winter holidays instead. My best friend from my high school and early adult years visited here for about a week this spring.
Finger
A "now" page is similar to an older network service known as "finger". Here's a good explanation:
Besides telling whether you were connected, Finger showed the contents of two text files in your home folder: .plan and .project. The original idea was to announce what you were working on and what you planned to do. A kind of static professional "status", with no interactions like likes or comments. My plan is to hang around until 2040 or so, by which time my great-grandchildren should be going to college/and or getting married.
Between now and then I'll do what I can to help others and keep this planet from being destroyed by its infestation of Homo Sapiens.
