A MINI-SERMON

The bumper sticker said WHO NEEDS TO SET GOALS? AN UNAIMED ARROW NEVER MISSES. How true! And... how sad. If you define success this way then living a successful life means nothing more than living until you die.

If you shoot an arrow without aiming you certainly cannot miss, but you may possibly cause great damage. If you live your life without a goal you will certainly suffer great damage! Jesus said it this way:

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." – Matthew 7:13-14

Aim your life carefully then! And what do we aim at, what is our goal?

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 3:12-14

We are not promised an easy journey, but we are certain to reach our goal if we are faithful.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith &emdash; of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire &emdash; may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. – 1 Peter 1:6-9
