Web My Way

In adiabatic's scrawlspace, in the section labelled '2024-12-12: More “you should have your own website” propaganda' it is written:

I will say something potentially theoretically controversial, inasmuch as I don’t think I’ve seen anyone speak out against the practice: Dual-hosted Gemini/Web sites make both experiences worse. In Geminispace, bi-hosted posts are peppered with too many end-of-paragraphnotes or footnotes or what-have-you; on the Web they tend to lack even the tiniest bit of “you can do this thing that isn’t expressible in pure Markdown” flair.

I think there is some truth to this; there are examples of both problems on my own webite. However, let me point to another writer's point of view to introduce my thoughts on this issue.

I have art and writing on my website(s), and if you can find them all hopefully you enjoy some of it, because I am not a "Content Creator" and I'm not interested in becoming an "Influencer," I just want to make stuff and experience life and share it with the world at my discretion.

Using Gemtext greatly simplifies my writing process and reduces the complexity and size of the files. Installing and maintaining two servers (one for HTML and one for Gemini) increases the complexity of the process, but this is primarily a front-loaded issue -- once the servers are configured I simply feed them my simplified Gemtext files.

Yes, some of my pages are "cluttered" with footnotes or other elements that would work better with HTML; and yes, viewing my Gemtext pages automatically converted to HTML lacks the "flair" that might be added when authoring the pages in HTML/CSS. Those flaws, however, are offset by the simplicity of the overall system. I still write a few things in HTML when that is really the best way to accomplish what I need, but for 98% of my stuff Gemtext works just fine. For me, it is fit for its intended purpose: to simply and easily communicate using the written word.

I don't want to fuss with inserting ᐸp> and ᐸblockquote> and ᐸa href=""> throughout my text. Serving my Gemtext content as HTML suits my purpose just fine. So, like @kirch, I hope others may find something useful or interesting in what I've written, but it is really written to serve my own purposes.
